چکیده

DESCRIPTION A 62-year-old man presents with a 5-cm anterior defect of the mandible extending from the parasymphyseal region to the angle after radiation and oncologic resection. A free fibular flap is utilized to reconstruct both soft tissue and bony anatomy.

Reconstruction of Lateral Mandibular Defects with Soft Tissue Loss: The Role of the Submental Flap

Introduction: Mandibular continuity defects after pathologic resections or traumatic events are difficult cases for reconstruction. Defects involving both hard and soft tissue loss are more challenging, because of problems in soft tissue coverage. The role of the submental flap in this regard is presented.   Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study from the archived files of Ghaem Hospi...

Possibilities of reconstruction and implant-prosthetic rehabilitation following mandible resection.

INTRODUCTION Mandible reconstruction is still very challenging for surgeons. Mandible defects could be the consequence of ablative surgery for malignancies, huge jaw cysts, infection and trauma. Segmental resection of the mandible may compromise orofacial function and often lead to patients psychological disorders. Despite very frequent use of microvascular flaps, autogenous bone grafts are sti...

Evolution of surgical techniques for mandibular reconstruction using free fibula flaps: The next generation.

BACKGROUND Virtual surgical planning (VSP) has contributed to a number of technical innovations in mandible reconstruction. We report on these innovations and the overall evolution of mandible reconstruction using free fibula flaps at our institution. METHODS We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients who underwent virtually planned free fibula flap reconstruction of the mandib...

Reconstruction of the mandible by fibula free flap.

BACKGROUND The most frequent cause of defect in the mandible is tumor-related surgery. Larger defects or anterior arch defects cause severe morbidity due to disturbances in function and esthetics. OBJECTIVES To assess the outcome of free tissue transfer for mandible reconstruction. METHODS Since 1998 we operated on 11 patients with mandible defects using the fibula flap as the reconstructio...

Prevention of Mandible Reconstruction Plate Exposure by Costal Cartilage Wrapping

After mandibulectomy in cancer surgery, reconstruction is often performed with a reconstruction plate covered with a soft-tissue free flap in patients in poor condition. However, the rate of complications for mandibular reconstruction is higher with a reconstruction plate than with vascularized bone grafts. We have developed a costal cartilage wrapping method to prevent exposure of the mandible...

Study of mandible reconstruction using a fibula flap with application of additive manufacturing technology

BACKGROUND This study aimed to establish surgical guiding techniques for completing mandible lesion resection and reconstruction of the mandible defect area with fibula sections in one surgery by applying additive manufacturing technology, which can reduce the surgical duration and enhance the surgical accuracy and success rate. METHODS A computer assisted mandible reconstruction planning (CA...
